Genealogy Package

The Glen House is delighted to announce our new Genealogy package in association with Jennifer Doherty from Clonmany Genealogy.  This package allows guests of the Glen House to take a step back in time and trace their ancestral roots with the aid of a professional genealogist and historian.

Clonmany Genealogy is a local group from diverse backgrounds sharing the common goal of connecting people globally to their Irish Roots.  They are motivated, approachable, inclusive, and dedicated to the pursuit of genealogical excellence. Their motto is “genealogy without source is mythology” and they produce fully verified family history reports in close consultation with clients.  Jennifer Doherty, our professional genealogist and social historian, has been engaged in family history for over 23 years, with a vast knowledge of local and national genealogical sources.

As a walking host Jennifer can help transport you to the historical era of your ancestors, advising on social history, heritage, customs, and of course genealogy.   Tailored historical walking tours of the local area can also be arranged with prior consultation.

Clonmany is an ancient village with a long and exciting history….from old Irish monasteries with a connection to St. Columcille, to the Viking raids which disturbed the peace of the locals.  It was home to not one, but two castles in its time – one of which was inhabited by the powerful Erranach family of Inishowen, the Morrisons, who were the monastery “managers”. The other, Carrickabraghy Castle, was the scene for the planning of the ill–fated revolt of Sir Cahir O’Dougherty which led directly to the “Flight of the Earls” and the Plantation of Ulster.

The Glen House itself, built in the 1700s was central to local social history and has plenty of stories to tell too.  Clonmany Parish has many famous sons and daughters also….from the grandfather of the former US Leader of the House, Tip O’Neill; Cornelius Doherty who helped to fund the political beginnings of the Kennedy Dynasty;  to Paul Dever, former Governor of Massachusetts.  John Toland, the famous rationalist philosopher, freethinker and occasional satirist was also from Clonmany, among many others! Find out more about these fascinating stories by arranging a tour or sit by the fire and be regaled by Jennifer.

As part of the package visitors of the Glen House will be also be provided with a Map of the three National Loop Trails.  These magnificent National Loop Walk Trails take in the surrounding Urris and Inishowen Hills, with a majestic view from the top of Mamore Gap that will take your breath away as you look out over the surrounding lands of Tullagh, Dunaff, the lighthouse of Fanad Head and out onto the vast Atlantic Oceans.
